Smart Home Questions
Will smart switches work with my existing wiring?
Most modern smart switches (Lutron Caseta, Leviton Decora Smart) need a neutral wire at the switch box. Most homes post-2000 have this; pre-1980s often don't. We check during the assessment and use no-neutral-required switches (Caseta) when needed.
Do I need a hub or can I just use the app?
Depends on the ecosystem. Lutron Caseta and most simple setups work without a hub via Wi-Fi. For 20+ devices, scenes, or Apple HomeKit integration, a hub (Lutron Smart Bridge, Hubitat, Home Assistant) gives faster control and local-network reliability.
Can you set up Alexa or Google voice control?
Yes — every install includes voice setup if you want it. Routines like "Hey Siri, movie time" (lights dim, shades close, TV on) are programmed before we leave.
How much does a smart home install cost?
Hugely variable. Single smart switch + thermostat: $300-500. Whole-home (every switch + scenes + voice): $4,000-12,000+. Custom Lutron RA3 with shades and audio: $15-50K. We give written quotes after seeing the home.
Will smart switches still work if internet goes down?
Lutron and most quality systems keep working locally — switches still control lights, schedules still run. You lose remote app access and voice control until internet returns. Cheap Wi-Fi-only switches (some brands) become useless during outages.
Can you integrate with my existing security system?
Yes — Ring, Nest, ADT, SimpliSafe all integrate. We wire cameras, doorbells, sensors, and tie them into your hub. Adding a smart lock that triggers porch lights at night is a 30-min config.
What about privacy and data?
For privacy-sensitive clients we recommend Apple HomeKit (local processing) or Home Assistant (self-hosted, no cloud). Cameras can be configured to record locally to an NVR, not stream to cloud.
Do you do retrofits in existing homes, or only new builds?
Both. Retrofitting an existing home with smart switches takes 1-2 days for a typical 3-bedroom. New construction is easier — we plan wiring during rough-in to support future smart-home expansion.
