Common Issues

Eight Problems We Fix Every Week

If you're experiencing any of these, don't keep resetting the breaker — call us. Most get worse and more expensive the longer you wait.

Dead Outlets

Dead Outlets

No power at an outlet? Could be a tripped GFCI upstream, loose backstab, or open neutral. We trace the circuit and fix the source.

Tripping Breakers

Tripping Breakers

Overloaded circuit? Short? Ground fault? Failed breaker? We isolate the root cause with clamp-on amp readings and continuity testing.

Flickering Lights

Flickering Lights

Loose neutral, failing dimmer, voltage drop, or utility issue? We test under load to pinpoint the cause — not just swap the bulb.

Buzzing or Humming

Buzzing or Humming

Buzzing from panel or outlet means arcing — fire risk. We open it up, find the loose lug or backstab, and tighten/replace per torque spec.

Hot Outlets or Switches

Hot Outlets or Switches

Warm covers = overloaded wiring or bad connection. Immediate hazard. We thermal-image, identify the failing junction, replace with proper-rated parts.

Burning Smell

Burning Smell

Electrical burning smell is an emergency. Turn off the affected circuit at the breaker and call us. We dispatch same-day, often within hours.

Partial Power Loss

Partial Power Loss

Half the house dark? Usually a failed leg in the main breaker, loose connection at the meter, or PG&E side issue. We diagnose and coordinate with PG&E if needed.

Outdated Wiring

Outdated Wiring

Aluminum branch circuits, knob-and-tube, cloth-insulated wire — all documented fire hazards. We replace with modern copper to NEC standards.

Our Process

Call to Repair

One phone call to a fully repaired circuit, usually the same day.

1

Phone Triage

Call (650) 550-0719 — we triage on the phone: is this an emergency? Can you reset something safely? Same-day dispatch confirmed.

2

On-Site Diagnostic

Licensed electrician arrives with full test gear — multimeter, clamp meter, thermal imager, outlet tester. Diagnosed properly, not guessed.

3

Fixed-Price Fix

Root cause identified. Written fixed-price quote for the repair before any work starts. Most fixes done same-visit.

4

Tested + Documented

Repair tested under load, all readings within spec, you get a written report (what failed, what was replaced, warranty).

The Fox Difference

Why Fox for Troubleshooting

Diagnose, Don't Guess

Full test gear — multimeter, clamp meter, thermal imager. We measure under load and find the actual root cause, not swap parts hoping.

Same-Day Emergency

Active hazard? Sparking, burning smell, no power, smoke? Dispatched within 1-2 hours, evenings and weekends included.

Parts in the Truck

Breakers, outlets, switches, GFCI/AFCI, common wire gauges — most repairs finished same visit, not "we'll come back tomorrow with parts."

Written Diagnostic Report

You get a written report — what failed, what was replaced, all readings, warranty terms. Important for insurance claims and resale disclosure.

Federal Pacific / Zinsco

These panels regularly fail to trip — that's what we find on a lot of troubleshooting calls. We diagnose and recommend replacement if warranted.

12-Month Warranty

If the same issue recurs and traces back to our repair, we come back free. Workmanship warrantied for a full year.

FAQ

Troubleshooting Questions

How fast can you come out for an electrical problem?

For active hazards (sparking, burning smell, smoke) — within 1-2 hours, including evenings and weekends. For non-emergencies (dead outlet, tripping breaker) — usually same-day or next-day depending on schedule. Call (650) 550-0719 for current availability.

What does troubleshooting cost?

Troubleshooting is $90/hour. We diagnose the problem, explain what we found, and quote the repair on the spot. If you proceed with the fix, we get started right away.

Can you fix the problem the same day you diagnose it?

Most issues yes — we carry standard parts (breakers, outlets, switches, GFCI/AFCI devices, common wire gauges) in the truck. Larger repairs (panel replacements, rewiring) get scheduled but quoted on the spot.

Do you handle PG&E side issues?

If we determine the problem is on PG&E's side of the meter, we document it and help you file the PG&E claim. We can't work on the utility side ourselves, but we know how to escalate.

My breaker keeps tripping. Should I just replace it?

Almost never. Breakers trip because something is wrong with the circuit — overload, ground fault, short. Replacing the breaker without finding the cause means the new one will trip too, or worse, fail unsafely. We trace the actual issue.

I have aluminum wiring — is that a problem?

Aluminum branch circuits (1965-1973 homes) are a documented fire risk due to oxidation at connections. We don't always rip out all the aluminum, but we install AlumiConn or COPALUM connectors at every junction to mitigate. Some insurers require this.

Can you work on knob-and-tube wiring?

Yes. We assess what's active vs decommissioned, recommend full replacement in occupied areas, and document for insurance. Most home insurance now refuses to renew on active K&T.

What's your warranty on troubleshooting work?

Workmanship warrantied for 12 months. If the same issue recurs and is traceable to our repair, we come back and fix it free.
